Azawakh are definitely not a breed suitable for just anyone.
They are a primitive breed bred to guard the camps and livestock of their people, the Taureg tribes and to hunt. They originate from the Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger areas of North Western Africa. They are a guardian breed very intune with what they were bred for. They are lean with prominent hip bones and some ribs should be visible, think marathon runner. They can run all day in their country or origin.
Their temperaments vary from highly suspicious of new things and strangers to the rare exception of being friendly to everyone. It is their natural instinct to be suspicious and aloof with people they do not know, you can not force an Azawakh to accept everyone, they choose who they accept and when they accept them. This is a breed that needs a lot of socialization and exposure to all things in life in their home and out in the world, they need a firm but fair pack leader. They have memories like elephants and will never forget a bad experience. They are also a very smart breed and for sighthounds are very trainable but you can never force
an Azawakh to do or accept things and people. They can be highly protective of what they deem their property and people but are also the most loyal and loving creatures to their people.
To have a bond with and the love and trust of an Azawakh is so very special and until you have experienced it it is indescribable .
*** These beautiful dogs are made to live with their people...it's their nature. They live to be close to those they love. They are NOT kennel dogs.
